Building Benchmarking Policy: Compliance How-to

The Detroit Benchmarking Ordinance requires commercial, industrial and multi family buildings to report their utility data using the EPA’s ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager. Buildings over 100k are required to begin reporting in 2024 and buildings over 25k sq ft to begin reporting in 2025. This video is an overview of the steps required to comply to the ordinance, as well as many resources for reporters.

Add the Detroit Building ID: 

  1. Look up your Detroit Benchmarking ID in the Building Lookup Tool

Ensure the quality of your data

  1. Run the Data Quality Checker on your building.

 

Sharing your property with the City of Detroit

You can streamline the submission process by sharing your covered property with the City of Detroit. This is a one-time step that you can take to have your annual submission automated in future years. It only requires one-time action to share data and it easily shares updated information if there are any errors or warnings to correct.

1. Select Contacts in the upper right corner of your Energy Star Portfolio Manager webpage

2. Select Add New Contacts/Connections

3. Input “Detroit Benchmarking Reporting” to the Name and select search.

4. Select Connect

5. Navigate to the sharing tab.

6. Select Share or Edit Access to Property

7. Select the required buildings, and then select Detroit Benchmarking Reporting.

8. Choose Personalized Sharing & Exchange Data ("Custom Orders")

9. Select Exchange data

10. Select All settings to Read Only Access and Submit
