Episode 4

Ru Shann Chavous Long was born and raised in Detroit and has been a resident in her community for over 60 years. She graduated from Charles E. Chadsey High School and attended local community colleges graduating Cum Lauda with a B.S. in Business Administration from William Tyndale College.   Shortly thereafter, she became employed by General Motors Fisher Body division for a short period before being hired by the State of Michigan Department of Human Services, where she was employed for 36 years.

Once she retired, she became active in her community when she saw how much blight negatively impacted a once vibrant neighborhood and the quality of life for residents. She joined the Midwest Civic Council of the Block Club Association in 2012 to help address the blight. Once active, she and several community residents began to work on other issues facing residents. Through her active role in the community, she became a member of a number of block clubs and formed several nonprofits. These include but are not limited to Greenway Heritage Conservancy, Greenway Grocery, Westside Coalition, Pine Lawn, L.L.C and the organization Cut The Crap.

It has been a pleasure to discuss with Ms. Long and hear her thoughts about the Midwest-Tireman community.
