The mission of the Office of Development and Grants is to compete nationally for, and support the implementation of, public and private investments that enhance the quality of life for Detroit residents.

The Office of Development and Grants was created in October of 2017 to align the City of Detroit's fund development - the coordination and support of relationships with existing and potential funding partners - with grant management support for City departments, including project planning assistance and oversight of expenditures.

Development and Grants Highlight of the Month

The City of Detroit is rapidly deploying resources to respond to COVID-19 and ensure an equitable recovery. Between the presidential declarations of emergency on March 13 and June 30, grants and donations empowered the City to serve over 672,000 meals, including piloting door-to-door delivery for individuals and families self-isolating or quarantining to mitigate the risk of spread; 845 individuals otherwise lacking access were provided secure shelter to self isolate through an expansion of shelter sites and supports; 1,250 $2 rides were provided to the testing site for those without other transportation options; and, in partnership with United Way and others, 1.8 million masks were distributed (1.2 million direct to the public via the Detroit Department of Transportation (DDOT) and the Detroit Police Department) to help residents protect themselves and others from further spread of the virus.

We thank all of our grantors and donors to date for their support, and welcome additional donations from individuals and organizations able to give.

The Grants team provides oversight and project management support for City departments with active grants.

  • We compete nationally by thoughtfully growing partnerships with funders, and continually seeking new opportunities to share Detroit’s success
  • We support implementation through shared accountability for project success, including project planning, procurement support, and monitoring of performance milestones
  • We impact the lives of Detroit residents by maximizing the funds available to support public services, operations, and infrastructure, and by increasing the efficiency and effectiveness of grant-funded projects
