Most Significant Accomplishments

  • Focus on Substance Abuse Prevention & Treatment (Founder and Co-Chair of Partnership for A Drug-Free Detroit)
  • All-inclusive outreach to citizens, making every attempt to inform, educate, problem-solve and most of all listen to the concerns of the citizens.
  • Keeping neighborhoods first working with the Planning & Development Department, Department of Public Works and Buildings & Safety Engineering Dept. to develop a comprehensive housing strategy that would demolish needed buildings but save those that can be rehabilitated into affordable housing for city residents.
  • Created the 'Office of Targeted Business Development' to work with all city departments and agencies in an effort to award more contracts to small businesses and to make sure that small businesses participate in development projects in the city.
  • Initiated additional funding for after school programs during the school year and during the summer. After school programs have been proven to reduce drug use, poor grades, teen pregnancy and truancy. Programs will center on recreation, academics and family activities

Mission

  • Preparedness, by careful review of all related documents, conferring with staff and direct contact with departmental heads.
  • Also, encouraging and endorsing the release of funds for the efforts of prevention and intervention of the use and abuse of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs and intervention of obsessive gambling.
  • Accountable, visible and full-time accessibility and availability to citizens, a priority of my office.
  • Returning telephone calls, responding to letters, attending community meetings, and guest speaking at schools and special events are but a few of the many ways to be accountable, visible and accessible.
  • Having a hands-on-pulse of what the community needs are. My staff and I are in the community as often as possible
  • And, for the citizen that does not call my office and also needs assistance, our physical presence in the community helps to afford us the opportunity to give support or aid to them.
  • A thorough review and understanding of the myriad of issues that come before my office on a daily basis.

Vision

  • Promote expansion of current businesses and welcome new ones, which would provide increased job opportunities and growth in tax revenues.
  • My vision for using my role to improve the quality of life in Detroit includes assuring access of efficient government services to all of our citizens.
  • Available health care, timely transportation and maximizing various housing initiatives, each contributes to improved quality of life.
  • Comprehensive programs in recreation, after school programs, art and the zoo would serve and enrich our families, and a gradual reduction in current taxes to provide relief to citizens.
  • Activate viable block clubs and community associations to assure input from all of our citizens.
  • Increased prevention and outreach efforts to assure our youth remain drug-free, and providing treatment upon request to persons deciding to recover from drug use.

Goals & Objectives

  • Increase opportunities for Detroit-based businesses and residents in all development projects. Make sure appropriate language is included in RFP’s that stipulate use of Detroit-based businesses.
  • Support a more active role prior to City Council’s final determination of departmental budgets by convening periodic review of each department.
  • Define measurable outcomes associated with all projects to assure optimum use of City resources.
  • Absolutely reduce the levels of substance abuse across our City through intervention, prevention, treatment and family support.
  • Provide increased recreation, education and employment opportunities for youth.

New Initiatives

  • Host grants and workshops for non-profit and community groups to share non-government and Internet access to funding sources.
  • Ways to encourage more residents and employers to do business with companies in Detroit.
  • Creating new approaches for direct participation in the working of city government by residents as it relates to their community and neighborhood.
