BIOGRAPHY


Council Member Brenda Jones was elected to serve the citizens of Detroit in November 2005. As a member of this legislative branch, she pledged her commitment to advocate for positive progression, safe and clean neighborhoods as well as opportunities for development throughout the entire community. Currently Council Member Jones chairs the Skilled Trades Task Force, Co-chairs the Entrepreneurial Task Force, and is a member of both the Homelessness and Belle Isle Task Force.

As the former President of Communications Workers of America Local 4004 Union, she represented well over 1000 members. During this tenure, she was known to advocate for fairness and equal rights in the workforce. Council Member Jones continues to work for equal justice. Currently, she serves as a Board Member for Michigan Coalition for Human Rights, Board Member for Detroit Metropolitan Interfaith on Worker Issue’s, Secretary for the Communications Workers of America National Minority Caucus, Trustee of Michigan Minority Networking Women – Detroit Chapter, Trustee of Elise Bryant Educational Scholarship Foundation, 1st Vice President of the A. Philip Randolph Institute (APRI) – Detroit Chapter, member of the Coalition of Black Trade Unionist (CBTU), member of the Trade Union Leadership Council (TULC), life-time member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), and a NEB Delegate for the Coalition of Labor Union Women (CLUW).

Council Member Brenda Jones has been an active member of the Wyoming Avenue Church of Christ for 40 years. She is also a Precinct Delegate for the 14th Congressional District. She is past president of the Oak Grove Community Council and continues to be an active member. She attended and graduated from Detroit Public Schools, Wayne State University, and Wayne State University Labor School. Her commitment to creating an atmosphere of fairness and positive justice for all has never wavered. Council Member Jones has been the recipient of numerous awards for her diligent commitment to making a positive difference in the lives of all she meets. A partial list of awards she has received are Spirit of Detroit Award, Sojourner Truth Award from the National Organization for Women (NOW), S’ Hero Award and the Tip of the Spear Award from the University of Michigan Labor Studies.

Council Member Jones is a trailblazer, visionary and humanitarian. Her greatest accomplishments are feeding the hungry, providing shelter to the underprivileged and saying a kind word to the hopeless. She continues to be and advocate for hope, opportunity and positive change.

As a member of Detroit City Council I will work tirelessly to address everyday issues that affect the well-being of Detroit residents and business owners. I am committed to improving the safety of our neighborhoods and schools. I also commit myself to the preservation of affordable living and exhibition space, and fostering an atmosphere of responsible development.
