The mission of the Office of Sustainability is to create healthy, green, vibrant, accessible neighborhoods where all Detroiters can contribute and benefit through:

  • Collaboration between City departments and agencies;
  • Engagement and partnership among the City, citizens, and relevant organizations; and
  • Process and Policy Improvement.

Detroit will be a city where all Detroiters have access to:

  • Land for recreation, jobs, and food
  • Good jobs that utilize their skills
  • Clean air, water, and soil
  • Transportation options, including walking, biking, and mass transit
  • Buildings and homes that are comfortable, safe, and affordable
  • Safe, nurturing neighborhoods
  • Healthy and affordable food
  • High quality utilities and services
  • Means to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to changes in our climate

In order to formalize the mission and goals, the Office of Sustainability created a Sustainability Action Agenda document that will help guide the future actions of the City of Detroit in the sustainability realm. Throughout the next year, we will be reaching out to organizations, residents, and all interested in this work to understand the challenges, barriers, and successes in the work that you do. If you are interested in hearing from the office, please reach out to us through the form below. We are a very small staff, so please give ample time for us to respond to your inquiry.

Current areas of focus for the office include:

  • Green Stormwater Infrastructure
  • Buildings
  • Food Policy
  • Municipal Fleet
