Village Health Workers


The Village Health Worker Partnership is a collaboration between the Detroit Department of Health and Wellness Promotion, University of Michigan-School of Public Health & School of Medicine, Detroit Hispanic Development Council, Friends of Parkside, SEMDOM, and Henry Ford Hospital Aim HI Initiative serving the east, west and southwest sides of Detroit.


VISION
The vision of the Village Health Worker Partnership is to address the total needs of the community: the physical, mental, spiritual and environmental.

MISSION
Strengthen the capacity of communities in Detroit to prevent or maintain the onset of chronic diseases, (i.e. diabetes, cardiovascular, & hypertension), unintentional injuries and obesity.

GOALS

  • Increase knowledge among community members about risk factors for chronic diseases, safety, and obesity.
  • Increase access to and use of healthy foods (i.e. fruits, vegetables, low- fat and whole grain products)
  • Provide health related services, support, guidance, and information to communities.
  • Strengthen capacity of communities to organize/ mobilize around specific health issues.
  • Reduce stressors (i.e. social determinants of health).
  • Increase Village Health Worker volunteers and community member’s awareness of relevant national and local resources.
  • Enhance the relationship between the communities, community based organizations and the Detroit Department of Health and Wellness Promotion, local precincts and universities.
