City of Detroit to Conduct Controlled Burn on Belle Isle April 5
4/4/2012 - In an effort to eradicate several invasive plant species, the City of Detroit will conduct a controlled burn on Belle Isle behind the Belle Isle Nature Zoo and by Oakway Drive near the golf course on Thursday, April 5, beginning around noon.
The Fire Department will be on location at the time of the burns. The burns, which will also activate/germinate the native plant seed bank that exists in the soil, will cover 9.1 acres behind the Nature Zoo and .7 acre in the Oakway burn area. This will be the City's second burn on Belle Isle behind the nature zoo in the last 3 years.
There will also be controlled burns at the Rouge and Eliza Howell parks sometime before April 15. The timing of the burns is dependent on the weather conditions. More specific burn dates will be announced 2-3 days prior to the burns.
The future controlled burns will cover seven acres at Rouge Park and five acres at Eliza Howell Park.
