Laboratory

The Laboratory Division provides investigations diagnosis and confirms testing for infectious and non-infectious diseases as well as other agents that may pose a threat to the public health if the community. The laboratory division has achieved “Center of Excellence” status as a result of its quality and performance. It serves the City of Detroit, and is an integral part of the Michigan Department of Community Health laboratory system, serving southeast Michigan as a regional laboratory.  It is the only public health laboratory in Michigan performing clinical, environmental, and public health testing. 

Laboratory Services

The Laboratory Division has received national certification to conduct non-waived moderate and high complexity testing in several specialty and subspecialty areas, including:

  • Chemistry
  • Hematology
  • Immunohematology
  • Toxicology
  • Bacteriology
  • Parasitology
  • Mycology
  • Immunology
  • Diagnostic Urinalysis

Regional Laboratory Responsibilities include:

  • Food Safety
  • Sexually Transmitted Disease
  • Screening
  • Syphilis Serology
  • HIV/AIDS
The DWHP Laboratory serve as a Regional Laboratory for Southeast Michigan.

The Laboratory Division is responsible for the testing of specimens and coordination with local community hospital laboratories from throughout the region.

The Laboratory Division operates four satellite laboratories, and supports community health centers serving uninsured residents. It serves as a referral center for specimens that are sent for testing to the Michigan Department of Community Health and the National Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

The Department of Health and Wellness Promotion Laboratory Division processes more that 600,000 tests annually!
