The Detroit Police Department is accepting applications for Police Interns for the Detroit Police Department. This
program is designed to prepare and develop students who are interested in a career in policing and law
enforcement. Interns will experience firsthand the duties of police officers in the neighborhoods, on patrol, in special
units and more. The Detroit Police Internship takes place in a fast-paced high-volume environment where students
learn about the scope and operations of a large active metropolitan police department, make valuable connections,
shadow officers and work on specific tasks and projects that will provide challenging learning opportunities. This internship is an
unpaid program, however, if funds become available, interns will be paid for hours worked. Students may arrange to take this internship for college credit through their university or college.
Interns will experience the full process required to become a police officer, including interviews, the police

academy, working in precincts and Coffee and Cake retirement ceremony.

Program Details:

  • Internship Schedule:  June 5 - August 11, 2017
  • Internship Requirement : 32 Hours per Week (Wednesday 9:00 am - 12 noon, minimum 3 day shifts Monday - Friday)
  • Mandatory Wednesday Career Day meetings, 9:00 am - noon 
  • Intern Orientation : Monday, June 5,  2017 : 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
  • Mini-Police Academy : June 6 -9, 2017 ; 7:30 am - 3:15 pm Detroit Police Training Academy
  • Precinct Assignment : June 12 - July 8, 2017
  • Special Units : June 11 - August 11, 2017
  • Intern "Retirement " Coffee and Cake: Tuesday, August 15, 2017, 2:00 pm

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Grade point average of 2.3 or above ( 4.0 system)
  • Currently enrolled in accredited college/university academic associate, undergraduate, or graduate program, or recent graduate ( within 3 months of application) in the field of Criminal Justice, Law enforcement or related field
  • Age 18 or older
  • No felony convictions
  • Citizen of the United States
  • Interested in pursuing a career as a Police Officer

All interns are required to pass a criminal background check, oral board interview, drug test, and provide a
Medical Certification of Fitness from a personal healthcare provider. Interns will also sign a Confidentiality
Agreement and Release of Liability form.
