The Detroit Police Department is accepting applications for Police Interns for the Detroit Police Department. This
program is designed to prepare and develop students who are interested in a career in policing and law
enforcement. Interns will experience firsthand the duties of police officers in the neighborhoods, on patrol, in special
units and more. The Detroit Police Internship takes place in a fast-paced high-volume environment where students
learn about the scope and operations of a large active metropolitan police department, make valuable connections,
shadow officers and work on specific tasks and projects that will provide challenging learning opportunities. This is an
unpaid program, and may be taken for college credit.
Interns will experience the full process required to become a police officer, including oral board interviews, the police

academy, working in precincts and Coffee and Cake retirement ceremony.

Program Details:

  • 10 weeks:  January 23 - April 12, 2017
  • Internship Requirement : 16 Hr per Week ( daytime weekdays hours, may also work weekends/nights if desired)
  • Wednesday Career Day meeting, 9:00 am - noon (mandatory)
  • Orientation : Monday, January 23,  2017 : 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
  • Mini-Police Academy : January 24 -27, 2017 at Detroit Police Training Academy
  • Precinct Assignment : January 30- March 3, 2017
  • Special Units : March 6 - April 11, 2017

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Grade point average of 2.3 or above ( 4.0 system)
  • Currently enrolled in accredited college/university academic associate, undergraduate, or graduate program, or recent graduate ( within 3 months of application) in the field of Criminal Justice, Law enforcement or related field
  • Age 18 or older
  • No felony convictions
  • Citizen of the United States
  • Interested in pursuing a career as a Police Officer

All interns are required to pass a criminal background check, oral board interview, drug test, and provide a
Medical Certification of Fitness from a personal healthcare provider. Interns will also sign a Confidentiality
Agreement and Release of Liability form at Intern Orientation.

Schedules are flexible, however, interns are expected to work two 8-hour shifts during day shifts, Monday - Friday and attend Wednesday morning Career Day sessions. We will make every attempt to accommodate work and school schedules.
