The City of Detroit has teamed up with the Southwest Detroit Business Association to paint 7 murals on 7 viaducts in Southwest Detroit. The viaducts were chosen based on the Planning and Development Department’s ongoing study of the West Vernor Corridor. Through robust community engagement, 7 artists will be chosen by the community. It is the #1 goal of this program to insure the murals reflect and celebrate the values and identity of Southwest Detroit. In order to be considered applicants will need a statement of purpose limited to 300 words, 3 images of past public art experience, and a concept rendering.
The first community meeting is July 26, 2017 from 6-8pm at Clemente Recreation Center.
Community meetings will also be held on August 23, 27, and 30, 2017 to provide opportunities for the community to vote on the concepts they would most like to see realized in their community.
Artist concepts are due by August 19, 2017
Murals will be painted September 10-20, 2017.
A group art show including the 3 artists in residence will happen October 12, 2017 in order to celebrate the program and the group’s achievements. Participating artist will be required to donate one piece of art to the city.
