Mayor Duggan Announces Career Fair to Fill 350 City Positions and Improve Service Delivery

2/20/2014 - Mayor Mike Duggan announced today that the City of Detroit is looking to fill more than 350 vacant positions in City government, including bus drivers, auto mechanics, police officers, EMS technicians, accountants and human resources analysts. The City will hold a job fair Friday, Feb. 28 and Saturday, March 1 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Cobo Center.

Those attending the career fair will be able to meet with representatives from City departments to learn more about the open positions, the departments and other career opportunities with the City.  Participants are encouraged to bring multiple copies of their resumés.  They may also attend on-site workshops on resumé building and interviewing techniques, and get information on the Affordable Care Act.

Individuals interested in any City position must apply online and may complete an application before, during or after the job fair. Attendees also may use one of 30 computers available to apply for the vacant positions.

“The City is committed to improving the level of service it provides to our residents and filling these positions is an important step in making that happen,” said Mayor Duggan. “We also want to recruit the best and brightest from within our community and make sure that city residents have an opportunity to be considered for one of these positions.”

In terms of job applicants, preference will be given to Detroit residents and honorably discharged veterans, Duggan said.

The career fair is being run in partnership with Detroit Employment Solutions Corporation (DESC), the city’s workforce agency.  DESC also plans to make other services available on the day to those attending the job fair.

“With large numbers of Detroit jobseekers expected to attend, it’s a great opportunity for us to inform them about some of the other free services that are available to them” said Pamela Moore, President and CEO of DESC.  “We will have staff available to explain the resources we offer, from simple job search advice to job-specific training programs to education opportunities.”

DESC will also be running presentations throughout the two days for jobseekers who need help with interviewing skills or with developing a resume. There will also be an information table for attendees who need more information on the Affordable Care Act.

“Detroiters need jobs” said Ms. Moore “and events like this are the perfect opportunity for them to showcase their existing skills and maybe learn new ones as well. We will be tracking and reporting the hirings made as part of our HIRE DETROIT! campaign.””
