DETROIT FIRE DEPARTMENT
This Division, under the direction of the Fire Commissioner and Deputy Fire Commissioner, establishes and enforces policies relative to all department operations.
The primary objective of this division is to provide a supply of safe, fully operational fire apparatus, functional tools, equipment, and supplies.
This division is responsible for the receipt and transmission of all alarms of fire, as well as those for emergency medical service. In addition, this division is responsible and accountable for the operation, testing, and maintenance of the dispatch, telephone and radio communication systems.
COMMUNITY RELATIONS DIVISION
The major objective of this division is to promote fire and life safety awareness through education, thereby, reducing fire deaths, injuries, and the loss of personal property.
EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES (EMS) DIVISION
This division, when notified, responds to emergency medical situations within the City of Detroit, and administers appropriate care and transportation to hospitals when necessary.
FIRE FIGHTING DIVISION
This Division has approximately 1,141 personnel housed in 45 strategic locations who are responsible for fire suppression and proper extinguishment of fires.
FIRE MARSHAL DIVISION
With a staff of inspectors, investigators, and clerical personnel, this division is responsible for the enforcement of fire codes through inspections and the investigation of complaints of fire hazards.
This division is responsible for evaluating, referring, and monitoring the injured and wellness of fire uniform personnel.
RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT DIVISION
This division is responsible for aiding the Fire Commissioner in matters concerning the Department's operating budget, contracts, and purchases.
This division is responsible for training new recruits, active fire uniform personnel, and external entities in various fire science techniques, laws and safety certifications.
