Workforce Development Board

The City of Detroit Workforce Development Department administers a wide
variety of programs and services for our customers, job seekers and employers.

WHAT IS THE CHARGE OF THE WORKFORCE INVESTMENT BOARD?

The primary responsibilities of the Workforce Investment Board, under the Workforce Investment Act (WIA), are to:
  • Promote private sector employer participation in all workforce activities to assist in meeting their hiring needs and to connect workforce investment with local and regional economic development strategies.
  • Develop a budget for carrying out the duties of the Workforce Investment Board, subject to the approval of the chief elected official, Mayor.
  • Certify the new one-stop operator(s) with agreement of the chief elected official.
  • Identify providers of training and labor market services.
  • Award contracts to certified service providers.
  • Identify and award competitive contracts to providers of youth services based on recommendations of a youth council.
  • Set local performance measurers and standards.
  • Conduct oversight of all workforce activities in partnership with the chief elected official.
  • Develop and submit a local plan, in partnership with the chief elected official, and assist the Governor in developing a statewide employment statistics system (new).

The Workforce Development Department identifies local employment and training custom designed training program options to assist employers to grow their businesses and make their workforce more productive.  Increased productivity through workforce development fosters economic development.  Economic development is synonymous with increases in employment opportunities for our job seeking customers.
