HIV/AIDS



Overview

The Detroit Department of Health and Wellness Promotion (DHWP) HIV/AIDS Programs began in 1985 and continues to provide a complete continuum of prevention, early intervention and care services for the general community and those populations engaged in, or subject to high-risk behaviors.

In addition, the HIV/AIDS Programs provides education and training; technical assistance to community-based organizations (CBOs) that provide HIV/AIDS related services in the Detroit and surrounding areas; and housing services for individuals and families infected and affected by HIV/AIDS.

The HIV/AIDS Programs employs a staff of administrators, outreach workers and public health professionals that are trained in behavioral health, social work, substance abuse, health education, community organization, and outreach.

Currently, all of the HIV/AIDS Programs services and activities are supported by local funding, state and federal grants.

 National HIV Test Day


The Detroit Department of Health and Wellness Promotion’s (DHWP) HIV/AIDS Programs will recognize National HIV Testing Day, observed annually on June 27, with activities providing free and confidential HIV tests and educational opportunities throughout the month of June.  

DHWP HIV/AIDS Program staff began the month with a focus on youth by providing HIV education and special presentations at Northwestern High School on June 1 and Cass Technical High School on June 2.  These educational activities will also be offered at Inkster High School and Cody High School.

A community health fair will be held on Friday, June 17 at the Detroit Community Health Connection – Woodward Medical Center located at 611 Martin Luther King Boulevard from 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm.   

 At the fair DHWP will offer free confidential HIV counseling, testing, and referral services as well as health screenings, such as glucose and blood pressure.  Incentives for the FREE and confidential HIV Testing are available to qualifying participants.  The staff will also offer give-a-ways, entertainment, refreshments, conduct raffles and fun activities.  ALL services are free.

DHWP will also provide HIV education and testing in the faith community with educational opportunities and free confidential HIV counseling, testing and referrals at Fellowship Chapel on June 25 and HIV education at Little Rock Baptist Church on June 26.

 Program staff will conclude the months outreach activities at the Herman Kiefer Health Complex and Cody High School on Monday, June 27.
