Process Steps - Mechanical Permit Application

Step 1:    Step-By-Step Instructions for Completing the Mechanical Permit Application are available under the Quicklinks Tab located on the left side. This document will guide you on how to complete the application accurately to ensure approval in a timely manner.

Step 2: 
   Applications are available online (for printing purposes only) or by visiting the City of Detroit Buildings, Safety Engineering and Environmental Department Mechanical Division (Room 408) at Two Woodward Avenue, Coleman A. Young Municipal Center, Detroit, MI 48226 between the hours of 8:00AM - 4:00PM, Monday through Friday.

ONLY a LICENSED MECHANICAL CONTRACTOR
with proper classifications can pull a mechanical permit and applicant MUST be registered with the City of Detroit to pull Permits. All fields are REQUIRED on the application EXCEPT WHERE NOTED. Supporting documentation (State of Michigan Mechanical Contractor License and un-expired identification information, such as driver's license, state-issued non driver photo ID or Passport must be provided along with the application).

Documentation Required: Proof of id (drivers license, state of Michigan ID, passport, etc.), copy of Current State issued Contractor license. Supporting document from the business/employer that will have the business Tax Id (if provided on application), Supporting document from the business/employer proving Workers Compensation Insurance Carrier information (if provided on application), Supporting document from the business/employer that will have the business UIA number (if provided on application) MUST BE submitted with the application.

Important Note: Electrical Permit is REQUIRED for New Installations

Step 3: 
   Submit application to License & Permit (L & P) Division with proper documentation and fees (in person or by mail) to:

Documentation Required:Proof of Photo Identification (drivers license, state of Michigan ID, passport, etc.), copy of Current State issued Mechanical Contractor License. Supporting document from the business/employer that will have the business Tax ID (if provided on application), Supporting document from the business/employer proving Workers Compensation Insurance Carrier information (if provided on application), Supporting document from the business/employer that will have the business UIA number (if provided on application) MUST BE submitted with the application

Note: Make checks (starter checks are not accepted) payable to: "Treasury City of Detroit". Other payment methods accepted are cash, credit cards (Master Card, Visa or Discover only), money orders and cashier's checks.

Fees: Refer to fees on the back of the application.

If application submitted by mail, the permit will be mailed to applicant. This permit process takes 2 - 5 business days.

If application submitted in person, the permit is issued to the applicant in person on the same day.

Step 4:
    L & P Division Trade Counter resource is responsible for the approval of the Mechanical Permit Application, unless there are discrepancies (See note below). The resource will provide the applicant with the assigned Permit Number and approved application.

Note: If there is any discrepancy in the application and documentation submitted the L & P Trade Counter will forward application and documentation (if application mailed) to Room 408 Mechanical Division for review and approval or direct the applicant (if application in person) to go to Room 408 Mechanical Division to obtain approval from Mechanical Supervisor.

Step 5:    Once the approval is obtained, applicant will be responsible for paying all associated fees to the L & P Permits Cashiering Desk.

Step 6:    After the fees have been paid, L & P cashier will issue the Permit and a paid receipt to the applicant. L & P Cashier issues permit to applicant same day if in person or mails the permit to applicant if application was submitted by mail.

Note: If application submitted by mail, the permit will be mailed to applicant within 2 - 5 business days.
