Process Steps for Journeyman Electrician's License

Step 1    Step-By-Step Instructions for completing the Journeyman Electrician's License Application is available under the Quicklinks Tab located on the left side. This document will guide you on how to complete the application accurately to ensure approval in a timely manner.

Step 2:
    Applications are available online (for printing purposes only) or by visiting the City of Detroit Buildings, Safety Engineering and Environmental Department Mechanical Division (Room 408) at Two Woodward Avenue, Coleman A. Young Municipal Center, Detroit, MI 48226 between the hours of 8:00AM - 4:00PM, Monday through Friday.

Qualification for Journeyman Electrician License:


  •     Must be 20 years of age.
  •     Must be a Detroit resident and show proof of residency.
  •     Have a current Electrical Apprentice Registration from on file.
  •     Applicants shall show proof of valid apprentice registration coinciding with the required 8,000 hours of practical experience obtained over a 4 year period.


Must complete an application form and submit a letter of documentation from your employer(s), attesting to not less than 8,000 hours of practical experience obtained over a period of not less than 4 yrs related to electrical construction or maintenance of buildings or electrical wiring or equipment under the direct supervision of a person licensed under the State of Michigan Electrical Administrative Act (Act 217 or 1956) (Note: This letter should have start and end dates of employment, # of hours worked, brief description of your experience or duties, the Journeyman Electrician License # and the city in which the Journeyman holds his/her license. Paycheck stubs are NOT considered valid documents).

All fields are REQUIRED on the application EXCEPT WHERE NOTED. Supporting Documentation: 2 completed Journeyman Electrician's License forms, Drivers License, Two 1 1/2" X 1 1/2" passport size pictures MUST be provided along with the application.

Step 3:
    Submit applications with documentation to Electrical Division in Room 408 for approval from Board of Electrical Examiners.

Documentation Required:

  •     2 completed Journeyman Electrician's License forms
  •     Drivers License
  •     2 Two 1 1/2" X 1 1/2" passport size pictures.
  •     Original notarized letter of document, on company letter head from your employer(s), attesting to not less than 8,000 hours of practical experience obtained over a period of not less than 4 yrs related to electrical construction or maintenance of buildings or electrical wiring or equipment under the direct supervision of a person licensed under the State of Michigan Electrical Administrative Act (Act 217 or 1956) (Note: This letter should have start and end dates of employment, # of hours worked, brief description of your experience or duties, the Masters License # and the city in which the Master holds his/her license. Paycheck stubs are NOT considered valid documents).

Step 4:    If Denied: Will need to provide requested information sent by the Board with notification of denial and you will need to resubmit to the board for approval.

If Approved: Applicant will need to come down to Electrical Division to pay for Journeyman Electrician License exam and then can schedule exam date (2nd Tues and Wed of each month). Exam is scheduled in room 408 of the Electrical Division.

Step 5: 
   Applicant must take the exam on scheduled data and time.

Step 6:    If applicant fails exam:
Following waiting periods apply before rescheduling next available exam:
3 months if a score of 50% but less than 75%
6 months if a score of less than 50%
1 year wait if you fail twice within 2 years

If applicant passes exam: Applicant will go to Electrical Division room 408 to receive Licensing invoice

Step 7: 
   Applicant must take invoice and pay appropriate feed to Licenses & Permits (L&P) Division cashier.

Step 8:  
 Journeyman Electrician's License is issued to applicant.
