Process Renewal or Registration Contractor License

Step 1:    Step-By-Step Instructions for Completing the Application for Renewal or Registration of Contractor License (Electrical) is available online by visiting the City of Detroit website at www.detroitmi.gov (under the Buildings, Safety Engineering and Environmental Department). This document will guide you on how to complete the application accurately to ensure timely processing.

Step 2:    Applications are available online (for printing purposes only) or by visiting the City of Detroit Buildings, Safety Engineering and Environmental Department Electrical Division (Room 408) at Two Woodward Avenue, Coleman A. Young Municipal Center, Detroit, MI 48226 between the hours of 8:00AM - 4:00PM, Monday through Friday.

Applicant MUST have a current and valid State of Michigan or City of Detroit issued Master Electrician License/Electrical Contractors License before he/she can Renew or Register with City of Detroit. If Applicant holds only a Electrical Contractors License he/she must hire a Master Electrician before he/she can Renew or Register his Contractor License with the City of Detroit.

Documentation Required::
If Registering applicant needs copies of their current and valid State of Michigan or City of Detroit Electrical Contractors License and Master Electrician Licenses.

If Renewing
applicant needs a current drivers license or State Identification. If Master Electrician hired is Licensed with State of Michigan, the Electrical Division will require a copy of the current Master Electrician License.

Note: If applicant does not have a Master's license, applicant will have to hire a Licensed Master Electrician or the applicant himself will have to test for a Masters Electrician License with the City of Detroit. If applicant passes the Masters Electrician exam then applicant can apply for an Electrical Contractor's License. If applicant's business is in the City of Detroit then applicant has to take an Electrical Contractors License test with the City of Detroit.

Step 3:    Documentation required:
Registration: Current State of Michigan or City of Detroit issued Master Electrical License and Electrical Contractor License.

Renewal: Current Driver's License or State Identification. If Master Electrician hired is Licensed with State of Michigan, the Electrical Division will require a copy of the current Master Electrician License.

Note: Make checks (starter checks are not accepted) payable to: "Treasury City of Detroit". Other payment methods accepted are cash, credit cards (Master Card, Visa or Discover only), money orders and cashier's checks.

Fees: Refer to Electrical Fee schedule online.

If application was submitted by mail, the permit will be mailed to applicant. The permit process takes 5 - 10 business days.

If application was submitted in person, the permit is issued to the applicant on the same day.

Step 4:    Electrical Division Clerical/Supervisor Approves.

Step 5:    Once the approval is obtained, applicant will be responsible for paying all associated fees to the L Cashiering Desk.

Step 6:    License is issued to the applicant.
