The Dangerous Buildings  Division responds to complaints of dangerous buildings, inspects dangerous properties and prepares cases to obtain a demolition order from City Council.

Did You Know?
There is a process to approve a structure for demolition which requires a vote of City Council.  The process allows for appropriate notification, approvals and clearances as well as oversight to ensure a property is ready for demolition and approval.

A permit for demolition must be secured in order to remove all or part of a structure. Private companies or individuals planning to demolish a structure should complete the Building Permit Application found on the BSEED forms page.

Public demolition of structures in the City of Detroit is now performed by the Detroit Building Authority, the Detroit Land Bank Authority and the Planning & Development Department. Buildings, Safety Engineering & Environmental holds no authority for demolition of property or the execution of demolition contracts.

For information about public demolition, contact 844-338-3366.

New Community Tool
Buildings, Safety Engineering & Environmental Department has published an new interactive online map showing city council-approved demolitions in the city of Detroit. The map was created by Data Driven Detroit with funding from the Living Cities/Woodward Corridor Initiative.

Data from the past several years can be displayed in three categories (Approved, In Process, Demolished) and will be refreshed on a quarterly basis. The self-help tool allows the community to research dangerous buildings in their neighborhoods and includes a feedback form so that users can report issues or errors to the department.
