The Outreach and Assistance (O & A) Unit, a division of the Senior Citizens Department, is a federally mandated program under the 1965 Older Americans Act. Its purpose is to provide telephone and walk-in information about senior orientated services and assistance, and to provide appropriate referral assistance as deemed necessary to ensure that services are accessible. Some of the referral services, which the outreach and assistance unit provides to seniors, family members and concerned persons throughout the City of Detroit, are:
• Senior Housing
• Informational Flyers & Brochures
• Prescription Drug Programs
• Referrals
• Transportation
• Senior/Caregivers Resources
• Daily Living Assistance
Whether it is as simple as a telephone number or as detailed as the availability of grants for home repairs, answers from the Outreach and Assistance Unit are just a telephone call away. We provide those answers with information on addresses, contact numbers and names, qualifications, hours of operation and so forth. With the data collected on the callers and reported to the City and the Detroit Area Agency on Aging (DAAA), which funds the Unit’s activities, problems can be identified and advocacy efforts can be undertaken to enhance the quality of life for Detroit’s senior citizens. Most importantly, seniors are able to find the services they need with the referrals given them and the ensuing follow-up calls made back to them.
The Outreach and Assistance Unit, formerly known as “Information and Assistance or Referral," is the senior’s link to the community. An extension of the Outreach and Assistance unit is Single Point of Entry Division, which focuses on the importance of planning for future long-term care needs. For more information, view the link.
