OVER TWENTY ARMED ROBBERY CASES CLOSED
Detroit Police announce the arrests of Hykeem Doss, Samuel Williem Ross, Jeffery Tyrone Smith, Vonshae Clark, Kevin Stephens who terrorized residents during their one month crime spree that involved at least sixteen (16) Carjackings, five (5) Armed Robberies, and one (1) attempted Armed Robbery. Two unnamed 16-year-old juveniles who actively took part in the crimes were also taken into custody.
Investigations reveal that their string of crimes spanned from February 6, 2008 through February 29, 2008. The crew was so brazen in their criminal activity that they committed six (6) Carjackings and two (2) Armed robberies on February 11th alone.
Thankfully no one was physically harmed during the commission of their crimes, but the emotional injury their victims suffered is immeasurable. The suspects typically targeted their unexpected victims as they pumped gas, or were entering or exiting their vehicles at various other locations. Most of the stolen vehicles were stripped of parts and later recovered.
“Once again we witness the menacing effect that a small group of individuals can have on a community”, said Detroit Police Chief Ella M. Bully Cummings. “Represented here are twenty-two crimes that have been definitively connected to these individuals and it could truly only be the tip of the iceberg. There is still a lot of investigating going on. I am proud of the hard work the officers put into solving these cases and am confident that with suspects own confessions and victims’ positive identification of the perpetrators that the cases against them are strong enough to warrant serious penalties by the courts. Our streets are certainly safer with these 7 persons in custody.”
Detroit Police arrested two of the thieves (Doss and Ross) on February 10, 2007. The two juveniles were taken into custody in February as well. Smith, Clark, and Stephens were later apprehended on March 1, 2008 following a traffic stop which also resulted in a handgun being confiscated from the vehicle that they were traveling in. It is unclear at this time if the recovered handgun is one of the weapons used in the crimes.
All of the arrested individuals (excluding the juveniles) have been charged with Armed Robbery, Carjacking, Felonious Assault and Felony Firearm. The juveniles were taken to the Wayne County Juvenile Facility and charged with Carjacking and Armed Robbery.
Detroit Police Department interviews regarding the arrests in these cases are available for interested media.
