Detroit Police Snag A MVP

The Detroit Police Department announces the latest MVP (Most Violent Person) to be taken into custody, Homicide suspect James Andrew Powell, III.

The MVP program is a public awareness campaign that features 4x3 posters placed in open venues profiling 27 at-large suspects that have eluded arrest.  With the public’s assistance, a total of 134 MVPs have been apprehended (266 profiled) since inception. The MVP program was launched in July 2004.

March 11, 2008:
Powell was taken into custody by officers who had learned of his attempts to evade arrest by re-locating to Kalamazoo. With the assistance from the Central Michigan Enforcement Team (CMET), Powell was arrested without incident following undercover surveillance of a location highly suspected of narcotic activity.  CMET, a drug team comprised of Ferris State Campus Police, Big Rapids Police, Kalamazoo Police, Kalamazoo County Sheriffs Department and the Michigan State Police.  Powell has been charged with Murder First Degree, Assault with intent to Commit Murder, Felon in Possession, and Felony Firearm, and Habitual 2.   .

Background on Case:
On July 21, 2007 at 11:30 p.m., Powell shot and killed a 37-year-old man who owed him a debt. The incident occurred in the 6800 block of Rutland. The victim was privately conveyed to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
