LINKED TO STRING OF ROBBERIES BEFORE AND AFTER
MURDER AT DRY CLEANERS
Detroit Police announce the arrest of Edward Michael Jackson (DOB 10/29/90) wanted for the fatal shooting of a 58-year-old man on February 6, 2008. At around 2:30 p.m., the victim and his wife were inside of the Dry Cleaners located in the 17500 block of James Couzens when two males entered and attempted to take the wife’s purse. The victim came to the aid of his wife and was fatally shot by one of the suspects. Both suspects then fled on foot in an unknown direction.
A composite of Jackson and his accomplice was created based on witness description. Edward Michael Jackson was arrested by officers assigned to the Western District following the distribution of the composite and will be arraigned this afternoon on homicide charges. Jackson is believed to have been the gunman.
“When a teen pulls a weapon and guns down someone so senselessly, it makes you pause and wonder how many people failed in this young man’s life,” said Police Chief Ella M. Bully-Cummings. “He has been in trouble before and clearly felt that his lifestyle was acceptable. As a community we can not allow this type of behavior to continue. I am proud of the work the officers did in the case. Police can arrest, but families are the first line of defense when it comes to crime prevention. Tough love today will produce a better child tomorrow. Everyone must get involved.”
The investigation into the homicide also reveals that Jackson and his accomplice committed at least three additional robberies or attempted robberies in the days surrounding the murder.
Jackson’s (unknown) accomplice remains at large. Anyone who has information on this case is being asked to call Detroit Homicide at 313-596-2200 or CrimeStoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP (anonymously).
Chief Bully-Cummings will provide additional details regarding the arrest at a press conference later today.
