
The Police Department open its doors to the community in observance of National Peace Officers Memorial Week. Throughout the community, the Detroit Police Department has scheduled events that celebrate and remember officers who have been killed or disabled in the line of duty.
On October 1, 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation designating the week of May 15 as
“National Peace Officers Memorial Week” in honor of law enforcement officers.
On Monday, May 12, through May 17, 2008 the following events take place at Detroit Police Department districts as we observe Police Week:
Central District (7310 Woodward) – Community relations officers host a presentation on “Identity Theft Prevention” for senior citizens. The event takes place at Heritage Place located on 3701 15th street. For more information call 313 596-1300.
Southwestern District (4700 W. Fort) – The Southwestern District kicks off police week with a day of fine arts performances by a jazz band and a choir. Also there is a presentations on fire and traffic safety, Detroit Police's Special Response Team, a Canine (K-9) demonstration and an appearance by McGruff "the crime dog". Northeastern District (5100 E. Nevada) - Students from Pershing High School and Bethune Duffield Middle school will receive a tour of the district, given tips on crime prevention and served lunch. For more information call 313 596-1100.
Western District (1441 W. 7 Mile) - Officers take students on a guided tour of the district as well as present a horse show. Members from Bomb Squad, Narcotics, Incidence Response, and Canine (K-9) are also on the program. For more information call 313 596-1200.
Eastern District (11187 Gratiot) - Officers take students on a tour of the district, host a luncheon and at the conclusion of the day's events guest will receive gift bags. For more information call 313 596-5900.
Northwestern District (11450 Warwick) – Officers speak to students on why it’s important to keep Detroit clean during a “Don’t be a litterbug” presentation, and about the dangers of having guns and drugs in schools. After lunch, students will have an opportunity to gain hands on experience by sitting in scout cars and going on patrol. Eddie Eagle will also make an appearance at the day’s events.
