Adopt-A-Shelter

As part of the Motor City Makeover 2008 Initiative, the Detroit Department of Transportation (DDOT) is sponsoring an Adopt-A-Shelter Program to improve cleanliness and safety within our neighborhoods. DDOT needs your help with removing litter at and around sheltered DDOT transit bus stops.

The Adopt-A-Shelter Program establishes a partnership between volunteers and DDOT. Volunteers may choose to “adopt” one or more bus shelters within their community or designated school district. The Adopt-A-Shelter program is community focused and has many benefits:

• You contribute to the appearance of your neighborhood
• A nice, clean, safe and secure shelter for all riders
• Community pride and public recognition is received for your efforts

On a monthly basis, your responsibilities as a shelter adoptee will include:

• Clean shelter windows
• Sweep shelter area; inside and outside
• Notifying DDOT for rubbish/trash pickup
• Advise DDOT of damage, graffiti, or other problems

Whether you are a DDOT rider or simply a concerned member of the community, adopting a DDOT bus shelter is an opportunity to contribute to an improved environment for everyone. Adoptorsʼ efforts are appreciated by so many people – seniors, students, and visitors.

Get involved in your community.
Be a part of moving Detroit forward, be a part of the ʻNext Detroit.ʼ Adopt-A-Shelter is a program that helps individuals, businesses, community organizations and schools make a real difference in their neighborhoods.

There are approximately 200 bus shelters in the Metro Detroit area. An adoptee, whether itʼs an individual or a group, can assist DDOT by alerting us to special maintenance needs and reporting vandalism or suspicious activity. You can help us keep the community safe and clean!

Together we make a commitment to the community and the people we both serve.
When you or your group adopt a shelter, DDOT makes sure the community knows about it. First weʼll display a sign with your name on the shelter, showing that you or your group is a DDOT Adopt-A-Shelter Partner working to keep Detroit beautiful! DDOT will also recognize new Partners in our department newsletter, at monthly DDOT Advisory Commission meetings, and in a press release to local media.
