MISSION STATEMENT

To strengthen and empower Head Start children and their families by targeting resources that will enrich the quality of their lives for today and tomorrow.

Head Start is an early educational program primarily for three (3) to five (5) year old children from income eligible families. Its purpose is to promote full intellectual, social and emotional development for children by involving the whole family. Early Head Start is a program that provides services for low- income pregnant mothers, infants, and toddlers (up to three years of age). Presently, there are 95 children enrolled in the program.

The Department of Human Services is the grantee of the Detroit Head Start Program. It oversees the operations by utilizing seven (7) regionally organized delegate agency contractors who provide services at over 135 sites throughout the City of Detroit. Currently, 7,497 children are enrolled for the 2005-2006 program year. The Department of Human Services Child Development Division contracts with schools and community agencies to operate Head Start Centers.

The Child Development Division has initiated several programs; one in particular is the Fatherhood Initiatives Project. The Fatherhood Initiatives Project is a program designated to ensure the inclusion of fathers in the future programming of the Detroit Head Start Program and to encourage continued involvement of fathers in their children’s lives.

DETROIT HEAD START PROGRAM INTERESTED IN DETROIT EVENTS TO SHARE PROGRAM INFORMATION

The Detroit Human Services Department Head Start Program is interested in appearing at events throughout the City to make sure that every eligible Detroit child is given the opportunity to learn about and to enroll in the program. If you are hosting an event, or know of an upcoming event that will be attended by young children or the parents of young children, please contact the Detroit Department of Human Services’ social services coordinator at 852-5621.
