What Every Taxpayer Should Know

Section 1:  Letter From The City Treasurer

Dear Taxpayer,

I would like to encourage you to navigate through our Web site.  You will find valuable information regarding the property tax payment process.  We also provide answers to the most frequently asked questions about property taxes.

Please note the following:

The 2006 bill was revised to collect non-tax items and special fees. The Solid Waste fee is for service and not a tax. Senior citizens may be eligible for a discount.

In compliance with State of Michigan Public Act 357, the 2006 City of Detroit summer property tax bill contains 2/3 of the Wayne County operating millage tax.  The City of Detroit will bill the remainder of the County’s operating millage tax in December 2006.

As last year, the City will continue to bill and collect current Wayne County taxes for property located within the Detroit city limits.  Previously, property owners had received a separate bill from Wayne County.  Future bills will now include both Wayne County and City of Detroit taxes.

Any unpaid City and County real property taxes not paid to the City by February 28 of the year become delinquent and are transferred to the Wayne County Treasurer for collection.  The tax years 2003 through 2007 delinquent taxes have been transferred to Wayne County.

To avoid interest and penalty charges, please allow at least five business days when mailing to ensure that payment is received by due date indicated on the bill.  The postmark date will not be acceptable as evidence of timely payment.

The Treasury Division is here to assist with your property tax questions or any other Treasury-related questions.  Our desire, as always, is to provide efficient and effective customer service.

Sincerely,

Timothy Ngare
Treasurer
