CITY COLLECTS SOLID WASTE FEE FOR TRASH Fee Replaces 1976 Millage Tax For Trash Collection and DisposalThe City of Detroit collects $300 from homeowners to cover the cost of collecting and disposing of solid waste. The solid waste service fee replaced the 3-mill tax for solid waste collection and disposal that Detroit homeowners had been paying since 1976. The 30-year-old tax was eliminated June 30, 2006.
City officials remind homeowners that the fee is not new nor is it an additional tax. The solid waste fee is a fee for service.
The solid waste fee is $300 for single family homes, and an additional $100 for multi-family dwellings. Homeowners, including landlords, will be billed on their July tax bills. Renters will not be billed directly by the City of Detroit.
Half of the fee is due August 15 with the balance due January 15. Homeowners may instead pay in full by August 31. This is the same schedule as their normal tax payments each year.
In addition, the City has made provisions for citizens, especially seniors, who may not be able to pay the $300 fee.
