Red Wing victory celebration

City of Detroit offers Advice for Red Wing Victory Celebration

June 6, 2008
The Detroit Red Wings are bringing the Cup back home! Mayor Kwame M. Kilpatrick announced that Detroit will honor the 2008 Stanley Cup Champion Red Wings with a parade and rally on Friday, June 6.
The parade will begin at 11 a.m. at Woodward Avenue and the Fisher Freeway (I-75) Service Drive.  It will proceed south on Woodward to Jefferson Avenue and go west on Jefferson to Washington Blvd.  The parade will end at Jefferson and Washington Blvd. A rally at Hart Plaza immediately follows the parade.

All Red Wings fans and celebrants planning to attend the parade and rally should be prepared for very hot day with temperatures expected in the 90s.  Fans also are encouraged to bring plenty of water, as public drinking fountains along the route are limited.

The City of Detroit expects approximately one million fans.  Those visiting or working in downtown Detroit should be prepared for large crowds. Portable toilets are available along the parade route and at Hart Plaza.  A handicapped seating area is available at the northeast corner of Grand Circus Park.

PARKING:
Parking is available at all Municipal Parking garages downtown. However, City officials are warning motorists of a popular parking scam involving con artists posing as parking personnel and collecting money from drivers waiting to park. Motorists should pay only those parking attendants authorized to collect funds.  Employees of authorized parking lots and garages wear badges that indicate the parking facility is licensed by the City of Detroit.  Individuals who park in privately-owned lots and garages should not pay more than the posted rates. Parking lot operators are reminded that rates may not be increased without the approval of the Detroit Consumer Affairs Department.  Such approval must be requested 30 days in advance.

The Municipal Parking Department recommends the following parking facilities:
  • Cobo Roof Deck Garage closed for construction

  • Cobo Hall Garage
475 Washington Blvd
  •  Millennium Garage
432 E. Congress
  •  Grand Circus Park Garage
1600-01 Woodward Ave
  •  Premier Garage
1206 Woodward Ave.
  •  Ford Underground
 30 E. Jefferson

Downtown parking patrons should look for bright green "P" signs, which identify MPD facilities. For more information on parking, call the Detroit Municipal Parking Department at (313) 877-8022.
