2/6/2007 - URBAN CORE MAYORS ENDORSE A "15 BY 15"The Urban Core Mayors adopted an aggressive, but realistic, "15 by 15" Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) for renewable energy. Following the lead of Ann Arbor Mayor John Hieftje and Grand Rapids Mayor George Heartwell, the group decided the fiscal and economic incentives to adopt an RPS for State and municipal operations warranted immediate action.
"Anything less than 15% renewables by 2015 sells our State short," said Urban Core Mayors Co-Chair Mayor George Heartwell. "We need to transition to the new economy now, not later. Renewable energy will be a huge contributor to economic activity, and it is a sustainable triple bottom line home run."
"While mayors have taken action in individual cities, the Urban Core Mayors believe a more complete solution requires immediate policy action at the State level to ensure our energy and economic future," added Co-Chair Detroit Mayor Kwame M. Kilpatrick. "For this reason, we adopted a resolution endorsing a State RPS of 15% by 2015, Kilpatrick said."
The Urban Core Mayors held their January meeting at the NextEnergy Center in Detroit where they reviewed the actions undertaken by individual cities to implement energy conservation measures and purchase renewable energy for municipal operations. The mayors emphasized how the increasing demand for fossil fuels, along with their diminishing supplies, has caused energy prices to become increasingly unstable. Money spent on renewable energy sources stays in the local economy, supports local businesses and farms and keeps petroleum dollars from leaving the country. Furthermore, renewable energy is a new economic growth sector for Michigan, and the purchase of renewable energy will lead to creation of new jobs and investment, which will create a competitive edge for all of Michigan.
Traditional energy sources, like coal, oil, natural gas, or nuclear that currently provide more than 95% of the energy we use and are derived from a finite supply that cannot be replaced. Renewable energy comes from sources like solar, wind, biomass, or hydroelectric that can be replenished.
