CONTEST INFORMATION AND GUIDELINES

Submit a winning entry in the City of Detroit Angels' Night Poster and Oratorical (Speech/Rap/Poetry) Contest, and you could win an iPod or other exciting prizes.

The City of Detroit Angels' Night Poster and Oratorical Contest is designed to give Detroit students an opportunity to express their feelings about Detroit and to share their pride in helping to keep Detroit's neighborhoods safe at Halloween.

CONTEST GUIDELINES
  • Students must be residents of Detroit.
  • Entries are due no later than Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2007.
  • Entries will be judged in three categories - elementary school (grades K-5), middle school (grades 6-8), and high school (grades 9-12).
  • An official entry form must be attached to the entry.
  • All entries become the property of the City of Detroit and will not be returned.
  • Entries may be used for promotional purposes.
  • All decisions of the judging panel are final.
  • Failure to adhere to contest guidelines may result in disqualification.
  • Sorry, First-place winners from past years cannot enter this year.

THEMES
Entries must reflect one of the following themes:

"Remain Ever Watchful This Angels' Night"

"Detroit: Yours, Mine, Ours"

"Celebrate Safety This Angels' Night"

Contest judging takes place October 15-17. Finalists will be notified by October 18. Winners will be announced at the first Halloween "Boo! Ball" on Saturday, Oct. 20.  Check for details on the Angels' Night Web site at www.angelsnight.org. Winning entries also will be featured on the site.

PRIZES
The following prizes will be awarded to the winners in each school category for each contest:

1st Place - iPod
2nd Place - Digital Camera
3rd Place - Gift certificate

POSTER CONTEST RULES
Poster sizes: minimum size 8" x 11"; maximum 11" x 17"
Automatic disqualification of entries that do not meet size requirements.
The official entry form must be attached to the back of the entry.

JUDGING CRITERIA
Poster entries will be judged on:
  • Originality
  • Creativity
  • Use of Color
  • Neatness
  • Clarity of message

ORATORICAL CONTEST RULES
  • Entries may be in the form of a rap, speech or poem.
  • Length - Raps, speeches or poems cannot exceed three minutes
  • A typed or printed transcript must be submitted on 8 1/2" x 11" paper - one side, double spaced
  • The official entry form must be attached to the entry.
  • Automatic disqualification of oratorical entries that do not focus on the themes indicated.
ORATORICAL JUDGING
All students entering the oratorical contest must recite their speech, rap or poem to be considered for a prize. The elementary and middle school students will be judged on Tuesday, October 16, beginning at 9 a.m. High school students will be judged on Wednesday, October 17, beginning at 9 a.m. Both judgings will be held at the Northwest Activities Center, 18100 Meyers at Curtis.

JUDGING CRITERIA
Oratorical entries will be judged on:
  • Did the presentation focus on one of the contest themes?
  • Was the presentation original and creative?
  • Did the presentation hold the audience's attention?
  • Did the presentation have a logical conclusion?
  • Did the speaker clearly pronounce his/her words and make eye contact with the audience?
All entries must be submitted by Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2007, along with the completed entry form properly attached. Failure to adhere to the contest guidelines may result in disqualification.
