Animal Control & Care

Several programs are provided by the Animal Control and Care Unit at
DHWP. Please review the hours and services for each.





Animal Control Enforcement:

Hours:
Monday-Friday 8:00-2:30pm
  • Enforce animal city code in residential and business areas
  • Respond to stray, injured, vicious, and dangerous animal complaints
  • Provide support to Police, Fire, Health and related agencies
Enforcement Investigators:
Office Hours: Monday-Friday 8:00am-9:30am
Field Hours: Monday-Friday 9:30am-4:00pm
  • Issue citations to enforce animal city code in residential and business areas
  • Resolve neighborhood dog nuisance complaints
  • Public Education (including speakers bureau, media etc)
Pet Licensing:
Hours: Monday-Friday 8:00-3:30pm
  • Process and issue dog licenses, processes the sale of animals
  • Coordinates license sales at multiple off-site locations

Adoption Program:
Hours: Monday-Thursday 10:00-3:00pm Fridays 8:00-3:00pm

Licensing/Renewal:
Information reminder letters and mail-in license applications are sent to owners of dog in the City of Detroit. You can purchase a dog license at the Detroit Animal Control Center, your local Neighborhood City Hall, or the Michigan Humane Society. You may renew your dog's license at our office Monday-Friday from 8:00 AM to 3:30 PM.

You may also renew your dog's license by mail. To renew by mail you must do the following:
  1. Go to your veterinarian; he/she will vaccinate you dog against rabies.
  2. After your dog is vaccinated, the veterinarian will give you a vaccination certificate/receipt.
  3. Mail all copies of the receipt and the fee to the Detroit Animal Control Center, 3511 W. Jefferson, Detroit, Michigan 48216. Or you may purchase a license in person by bringing the copies of the vaccination certificate/receipt to the Animal Control Center.
The license fee is $15.00 for a non-neutered dog and $10.00 for a neutered (spayed) dog.
